They are now almost identical to the Lumatek, but they are dual-voltage (120V/240V) and work with every lamp that BGH carries.

Digital Ballasts

The days of the old humming, magnetic core & coil-type ballasts may soon be coming to an end. The digital (electronic) ballast is the latest in ballast innovation. Digital ballasts are more efficient, quieter, cooler, and softer on the bulb. Digital ballasts do not have any of the usual transformers, capacitors or igniters; instead these ballasts have electronic circuitry to do the same job, more efficiently. What might take a standard coil/magnetic ballast 680-700 watts to fire a standard 600 watt bulb, may only take a digital ballast only 600-620 watts to fire the same bulb to the same brightness. The old coil type ballasts are hard starting ballasts; when the ballast fires the bulb it sends full power to the cold bulb. Over time, this shortens the bulb life and reduces the PAR output of the bulb. Digital ballasts start by sending a low amount of power to the bulb and steadily increases the power over the next few minutes until the bulb has reached full brightness. This is also known as soft starting, which minimizes the damage to the bulb and increases its PAR life (PAR represents the plant usable light; it’s what plants “see” and use, versus lumens which are what people see). After one year of use the plant usable light coming from bulbs that are run on digital ballasts has decreased only by 20-25% where as the same bulb being used in the coil type ballast would have lost 50-60% of its plant usable light over the same period of time.

Coil type ballasts are also known to cause the bulb to flicker or strobe. This takes place so quickly that the neither human eye nor light meter can pick it up. Digital ballasts provide a uniform power supply to the bulb, thus eliminating the flickering from the bulb.

A great feature of digital ballasts is the ability to run both MH and HPS bulbs on the same ballast without having to flip a switch (it should be noted that not all digital ballasts on the market are programmed (or optimized) to do this properly). Digital ballasts are “intelligent ballasts” and most are able to recognize the difference between the two types of bulbs and fire them accordingly. Because of the high starting power requirements of some bulbs (such as the Solarmax) digital ballasts cannot always fire these bulbs due to the soft starting feature inherent to digital ballasts. Nor do digital ballasts fire multi-vapor bulbs. The good news is that the majority of bulbs in our industry work just fine with digital ballasts. However, a great safety feature of digital ballasts also help to prolong the ballast’s life. If the bulb is defective or incompatible and does not fire, the ballast will only attempt to fire the bulb after a predetermined amount of time and shutdown if unsuccessful. Digital ballasts will also shut down if there is a short in the system. When purchasing a digital ballast, the consumer must be aware that there are a few “black sheep” in the digital ballast family. There are many inferior quality digital ballasts on the market; these manufacturers proclaim amazing power savings but don’t deliver. BetterGrow Hydro has looked at numerous digital ballasts over the past several years and we have settled on the Lumatek brand for specific reasons. Below are the results of our in store tests with various brands of ballasts. Gathering data was conducted using a wattage meter and a Hanna Light Meter, both of which are available to our customers should they wish to purchase these meters and run their own tests. The Hanna Light Meter was placed 29” from a Hortilux bulb and the lumen reading was taken once the bulb had reached and maintained full brightness. Here are the results from a few of our tests:

An important aspect to note from the above results is that the digital ballasts that run on low power also emit less light. While this may help out with the power bill, it is disastrous for your plants. The actual efficiency of some of these ballasts is worse than the old coil ballasts.

Another observation was that the Galaxy ballast seems to have a problem firing a new bulb for the first time. After firing a new bulb for two minutes the ballast shuts down and stops firing the bulb. Once the ballast has fired the bulb for the first time, however, it is able to fire the bulb the second time and maintain the power to the bulb. The Galaxy was also the least efficient out of all the ballasts in converting electrical power into light; even the 1000w coil ballast was more efficient!

The 750w Lumatek ballast produced more light than 1000w Evolution; this was true even though the Lumatek ballast was powered by 220v and not the required 240v. We also found that the light intensity on the Evolution decreased further after 30 minutes of operation.

It should be noted that Hortilux bulbs (which we used for many of our tests), while having a good spectrum, have a relatively low lumen output. Had we used a standard bulb (such as a Philips or Sylvania) the output ratings undoubtedly would have been higher.

The last point we would like to make here is the fact that after 2-3 years of operation (sometimes less), coil ballasts begin to degrade in performance and generate even less light than when they were new; digital ballasts do not experience this decrease in performance.

RF Interference

The next test was to measure RF interference. To do this we first placed the ballast at four feet from our radio and gave a rating according to the amount of interference for both FM and AM radio stations. Then the ballast was then placed 30 feet from the radio and the same process was repeated. Our results are as follows

Customers should avoid all digital ballasts that do not have RF shielded lamp cords. The RF interference from these digital ballasts is substantial. If you do not see a metal shield between the outer coat and the wires on the inside of the lamp cord, the cord is not shielded. Digital ballasts do not interfere with FM radio stations but do cause static on AM stations. The better quality digital ballasts, such as the Lumatek, cause the least amount of interference. It should be noted here that the 750w Lumatek ballast we tested was of their latest revision. Ironically, this revision does not utilize an RF shielded lamp cord; Lumatek claims that this is due to internal changes made to the ballast that make the RF shielding unnecessary, and as you can see by the test results, it produced virtually no interference after the first few seconds. Lumatek claims that all of their ballasts will utilize this same construction in the near future.

Regarding out Testing

BGH ran these tests in an effort to address the tons of questions we receive each week from our customers regarding digital ballasts and their true performance versus their stated performance. The tests were not designed in any way to slander some manufacturers or promote others. The problem that we, as well as our customers, faced was that every ballast manufacturer whose ballast we have tested over the years had made claims that were either exaggerated or simply not true. The only way to know for sure was for us to conduct the tests ourselves. Granted, we did not have access to some of the expensive equipment that the manufacturers did, but what we have found is that you can use certain equipment to run certain tests on a certain ballast to produce results that look favorable or poor, it just depends on how the tests are run, what criteria is used, etc. Obviously, if a manufacturer runs a test and doesn't like the results, they are not going to advertise them. They may, however, run a different test and if they like those results publish those instead. The point is, there are many different ways to “skin a cat” when it comes to testing digital ballasts, and we just used the testing scenarios that were available to us (look, you can have the most expensive RF interference testing equipment available that tells you a ballast is clean, but if you turn on a radio 30 feet away and experience interference, that’s got to tell you something!).

DIY Assessment of Marijuana Market Numbers

Morgan Fox at Cato Institute sees great profit potential from legalizing marijuana because “experts” tell him that the market in this commodity may be worth as much as $120 Billion a year, which is more than wheat and corn combined. An impressive claim indeed, but is it true?
You are going to hear many numbers like this in the coming year. In my continuing quest to make our democracy work better, I am going to lay out some DIY math that will help you discern in a few easy steps which estimates are believable and which are not. Given the ideological nature of marijuana legalization debates, within 5 minutes of my posting this, someone somewhere on the Internet will write “I don’t care about evidence, I believe X”. If that’s you, skip down to the comments section now and start bloviating, what follows is data, nuance, the encouragement of independent thinking and a lot of other stuff you will find upsetting.
But for the blessed and admirable rest of you….
Step 1: Convert the estimate of the financial value of the U.S. marijuana market into something more understandable, for example number of ounces or joints.
Start with your market number. For the sake of argument, in this case let’s take Fox’s upper estimate of $120 Billion/year. That’s too big a number for any of us to relate to or understand, so Step 1 is to convert it into ounces or joints of marijuana.
The price of an ounce varies based on where you are, whether you buy in bulk, and what grade you purchase. But $120/ounce isn’t a bad estimate for a national average in any case, and here it makes the math easy so let’s use it. If marijuana costs $120/ounce, Americans would have to purchase 1 billion ounces a year to reach the $120 Billion dollar estimate. Already you will be suspicious of Fox’s market number because this works out to over 3 ounces per American (1 billion ounces divided by slightly over 300 million people), assuming that everyone uses marijuana, including newborns, people in comas and emphysema patients.
For many people knowing ounces gives them a sense of how much pot we are talking about. For others, an estimate of joints is more helpful. Drug policy wonks estimate the size of a joint at .454 grams because that is not a bad estimate and it makes the math easy (1 pound = 1000 joints). So using this “standard joint” metric, an ounce of marijuana yields 1000/16 = 62.5 joints. Data from dispensaries and users indicate that most experienced users actually roll slightly bigger joints than “standard size”. To acknowledge that and again make the math easy, bump the joints/ounce ratio up to 50 and you get in the example we are working with 3 ounces X 50 joints = 150 joints per American (again, counting every man Jack and girl Jill one of the them) per year if the $120 Billion figure is correct.
Step 2: Divide your ounce and joint estimates by the number of people who are current pot smokers.
We can’t stop at Step 1 because not all Americans smoke pot, indeed the vast majority don’t and never have. The federal government National Survey of Drug Use and Health gives somewhat suspect estimates of the use of heroin, methamphetamine and the like, but it’s marijuana numbers are pretty good so take your estimate of the number of current pot smokers from there. The survey’s current reported number of Americans who have smoked pot in the last month is 17.4 million. You can add a bit to that depending on how much you think people lie. For the sake of our example let’s make the math simple again and assume that another 7.6 million Americans fibbed about not using marijuana in the past month, giving a total of 25 million current users.
When you divide 25 million marijuana users into one billion ounces, you get 40 ounces per user per year. If you were not doubtful of the $120 Billion figure yet, the implication that the average U.S. pot smoker is sucking down two and a half pounds of marijuana a year should set off alarm bells for you. Again using our simple math above, this works out to 40 ounces X 50 joints/ounce = 2000 joints per user per year.
Step 3: Divide your estimate of amount of marijuana use per user by days of use.
Current pot smokers report that they use marijuana an average of 60 days a year. Using our current example, 40 ounces/60 days of use means that the average user would have to go through 2/3 of an ounce of marijuana on each day that they used marijuana. That’s .67 X 50 or 33.5 joints per day of use. And there’s a terrific bridge for sale in Brooklyn too.
Step 4 (Optional): Do some sensitivity analyses.
I have made the math above transparent so that you can fiddle with the numbers as you see fit and see what happens. You could for example alter joint size or number of users up or down see how that affects the validity of whatever market estimate you are looking at. There is no amount of tweaking of assumptions that will make the “experts” whom Morgan Fox says he believes sound credible, but such sensitivity analyses may help you determine whether other estimates you hear are believable to you.

As Arizona prepares to become the 15th state allowing the medicinal use of marijuana, Valley business owners are having mixed feelings about dispensaries opening near their stores.

The Phoenix store Medical Marijuana Dispensaries of Arizona set up shop this fall in anticipation of the passage of Proposition 203 — Arizona’s citizen-drafted medical marijuana measure that was approved by voters Nov. 2. The dispensary is the first store of its kind in the state.

But Debra Nehs, owner of the nearby business Kidding Around Playtown, is not pleased that the store has come so close to her business.

“We run a children’s play place and we’ve already had a few customers express concern that it’s over there,” she said. “I was just surprised that that’s where it opened up.”

Proposition 203 makes it legal for Arizonans with certain illnesses to be prescribed medical marijuana. After a close vote count following the Nov. 2 election, the measure passed by about 4,300 votes, or less than 0.25 percent of ballots cast.

Other dispensaries have started to pop up in the Valley, like the Arizona Patients Association in Phoenix and Blue Monkey Apothecary in Gilbert.

Allan Sobol, the manager of Medical Marijuana Dispensaries, said in a Nov. 4 interview with The State Press that finding a location to open up was not easy.

“Corporate America still is resistant to this,” he said. “We checked into a lot of locations, but they were resistant.”

Medical Marijuana Dispensaries of Arizona is located near Interstate 17 and Bell Road in a shopping center that is home to a variety of businesses.

The majority of the complex’s storefronts, however, are now displaying “For Lease” signs in their windows, said Sherri Collins, a storeowner in the shopping center.

Collins is one of the owners of Other Mothers, a children’s, women’s and maternity clothing exchange store. Collins said while she voted against the medical marijuana proposition, she is looking forward to possible increased shopping traffic the dispensary will bring.

“It’s very sad to see how many ‘For Lease’ signs are in the windows around us,” she said. “It’ll be good to see the space occupied and people working and coming in and out.”

Lynn Morrison Company, the managers of Bell Canyon Pavilions, was unavailable for comment.

Collins said while her business tends to do well in hard times, the added foot traffic in the area will benefit her store the same way the complex’s movie theater does.

“We get a lot of business from the theater,” she said. “The dispensary is going to help business, it can’t not.”

Mary Jo Angle, shift and training manager from Other Mothers, said in her 10 years working at the store, she has seen many other businesses come and go, but she’s still against the dispensary.

“I’m totally against it; I just feel we’re making [marijuana] so much easier to get,” Angle said. “It’s a moral question. I don’t think it’s a good thing when we have so many children around here.”

Other Mothers customer Cecilia Jallo shops at the store often and said she intends to continue doing so.

She said she would continue shopping there as long as the atmosphere of the shopping center didn’t change.

“But I would hope it wasn’t an issue because it’s for medical use,” she said.

Entrepreneur Mike Wells is a partial owner in a window washing company and in a horticulture product supply company, and said he plans to open his own medical marijuana dispensary because it benefits patients and is an untapped market.

“We’re contacting construction companies, marketing companies, lighting companies, security companies, glass companies, all sorts of companies that any person who would be starting a business would have to reach out to,” Wells said. “It’s benefiting everyone economically.”

He said dispensary owners, marijuana cultivators and caregivers will be in need of the various products that go along with owning a business.

“This industry, especially in Arizona … will help support this economy and it will put us back on our feet,” he said. “There is money to be made because it’s an untapped market.”

Mark Stapp, executive director of the Master of Real Estate Development Program at ASU, where professors educate students in the practices of real estate development, acknowledged that the commercial real estate market is going through a difficult time, but it is unlikely medical marijuana dispensaries will help.

“In general, unrelated to medical marijuana, the commercial real estate market is very difficult,” Stapp said. “But my guess is [dispensaries are] not going to make a huge difference at all, there’s just not a lot of stores opening.”

Proposition 203 limits the number of medical marijuana dispensaries to about 120 in the entire state and also puts restrictions on where they can be located.

The Arizona Department of Health Services has begun to draft guidelines for implementation of the law, with the initial draft of the rules expected to be released Dec. 17. ADHS plans to begin accepting dispensary applications in April 2011.

Wells said he will be ready to apply for his license when that happens.

“We’re making contacts so that when the Department of Health Services comes out with the application we are ready to go,” he said.

Business owner Nehs said she’s uncertain what effect the dispensary will have on her business.

“I don’t think anyone is sure what it’s going to bring, what kind of clientele or what kind of activity over there,” she said. “It’s a pretty big unknown and we’re not sure whether it will harm our business or not.”

craignewmark.jpgAs we prepare to release our SAI 25: World's Most Valuable Startups list, we're running through some final valuation numbers. One company that is a shoo-in for the list is Craigslist (yes, it has been around a while, but we're defining "start-up" as private companies founded in recent memory that has yet to go public or sell out).

We've struggled to get formal business metrics for Craigslist, but ClickZ has summarized a recent report from Classified Intelligence that should help. CI estimates Craiglist's numbers, but it has at least gone through the laborious process of counting listings, pageviews, etc.

So here are some metrics:

2007 Est. Revenue: $55 million
2008 Est Revenue: $81 million
Monthly Pageviews: 9 billion
Monthly Job Listings: 2 million
Monthly Ad Listings: 30 million
Employees
: 25

Estimated Costs

Let's assume that each of Craigslist's 25 employees costs about $125,000 a year, all in. That's probably high--Craigslist is run like a non-profit--but it should be in the ballpark. This adds up to about $3 million of salary and other HR costs. Let's assume that Craigslist will grow this year, and let's assume that it spends another few million on prosaic costs like rent, insurance, travel, etc. Total estimated 2008 operating expenses: $7.5 million.

On the "cost of sales" line, let's assume that Craiglist spends a boatload on servers and bandwidth to keep the site running smoothly. Craigslist's content is not at all bandwidth intensive--all light text, no computation or transactive processing like eBay or Google--so this should keep its costs well below those of other huge global sites. Let's call it $50 million a year. (This is probably high--grateful for any help in refining).

Add all that together and use the CI revenue estimate, and you have a business with about $80 million in revenue and, say, $25 million in operating profit
. Apply a 10X revenue multiple and/or 25X operating income multiple, and you would have a company worth about $750 million. But obviously Craigslist is worth a heck of a lot more than that.

Craigslist's Real Value

Why is Craigslist worth more than meets the eye? Because it's run like a non-profit. Craig Newmark and co. don't give a damn about generating revenue or profit, and more power to them. But if Craig ever want to sell Craigslist, he'd probably want to get something closer to true value for it--which means we need to think about the company's real earning power.

Let's assume that, instead of charging for job ads in only 11 cities, Craigslist charged for all job ads (currently 2 million a month). Let's assume that it also charged for another 5 million of the 30 million ads on the site each month. Let's assume that Craigslist users were so horrified by the outrage of being charged even a de minimus listing fee that two thirds of these listers stormed off in a huff so that the 7 million of paid listings dropped to, say, 2.5 million a month. And let's assume that Craigslist charged its standard $25 job listing fee for all of them.

What would that generate in revenue? $62.5 million per month, or $750 million a year.

Let's further assume that this outrageous affront to a minority of users--$25 per listing!--would require huge customer service and processing costs, so that Craigslist's overall cost base jumped to $250 million a year. Then we'd have a business with $750 million in revenue and $500 million of operating profit.

Let's put very conservative revenue and operating profit multiples on that--say 7X revenue and 10X operating profit--and we're conservatively looking at a business worth $5 billion.

The best online sites all have one characteristic in common that keeps the competition at bay: simplicity.

Google’s got a clean, no-frills text box that conceals the complexity of behind-the-scenes magic. Amazon keeps their users coming back with reviews, recommendations, and a giant inventory. And online classifieds site craigslist still boasts the most simple user experience of all minus the colorful ads, flashy video, and garish banners.

With an estimated revenue of $80 million in 2008 and a valuation of about $5 billion, craigslist has continued to keep venture capitalists salivating. Simply put, when it comes to traffic, they’re spanking the would-be craigslist killers, including eBay-owned Kijiji, Vast.com, and Oodle.com.

And it’s hard not to wince when remembering Microsoft’s oft-maligned Windows Live Expo, which shut down in July after a little more than two years of operation.

Lately it seems the competition is understanding that snatching away the die-hard craigslist loyalists is more laborious than finding a younger, more unfaithful audience on Facebook and myspace. Both eBay and Facebook itself have launched marketplace applications, and Oodle is powering myspace’s classified site.

But it appears that recently there have been a few cracks in craigslist’s walled fortress. Ebay, who owned a 28 percent stake in craigslist, was served with a lawsuit by founder Craig Newmark after launching their own version of online classifieds, Kijiji.com. Craigslist wants to force eBay to dilute its shares to less than 25 percent, but eBay isn’t budging. In fact, according to a CNET article, eBay’s CEO said he would happily buy out the remaining portion of craigslist shares to claim full ownership.

Considering craigslist’s aversion to change and their refusal to allow other sites to spider their content, I wasn’t surprised to hear Craig Newmark’s response to my question on if a marketplace application is in craiglist’s future.

“I wish I had more to say,” he said. “We just haven’t really considered it.”

So the point is, for the time being at least, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Just Communicate Something

I’m far from perfect in my business methods, but one thing I’ve tried to do is maintain timely communication. Nothing is more frustrating to me than sending an e-mail or leaving a voice mail and not hearing anything for several days, and I don’t want to cause that frustration for someone else.

There’s a few reasons I can think of that someone would intentionally delay replying to a message:

Don’t have all the information at hand
Maybe you’re waiting on a little piece of information before replying even though you have most of what the other person needs, or maybe you’re not exactly sure what the solution to a problem that’s being experienced is. Either way, sending a quick message of acknowledgement will calm nerves and let the other person know you’re on it.

Avoidance
You knew this message would come and you know they won’t like your reply. They’re order is delayed, or something has been lost and can’t be replaced in a timely manner. Regardless, delaying a reply to avoid the situation can only make things worse.

Exerting Control
Not replying right away, or at all, could be a way of showing that you have more power than the other person. Replying could show that even though you have limited time you still reliably engage with employees and clients - improving your image and making sure you’re in the loop.

Procrastination
You read or hear a message and know you need to reply to it. You probably even think of what the reply will be. But you don’t send the message. By procrastinating, you waste a ton of time re-thinking about the situation or worse never getting it off your mind when you’re trying to focus on other more important tasks. If it takes less than two minutes, why not just reply to it now?

I think clients really do appreciate fast replies, even if the communication isn’t 100% perfect. You’ll be known as someone they can go to when they have a question that needs answering, have a problem that needs to be solved, or need an opinion about a potential new and exciting project (that you can then be chosen to work on!).

Or maybe there’s an even better way to show clients you care?
